It's an old laptop and it seems like I'm going to be able to get at least $200 for it, easily. So please understand why it's so hard to pursuade me otherwise. But I began looking into this Macbook as an upgrade from that laptop (a Dell laptop I had running Manjaro alone). It's an 8GB laptop and it still runs very well, so I understand where you are coming from. One other big thing is that I'm currently trying to sell my older laptop. $150-200 dollars is still a decent enough price difference that I think I need to think about it, but I think I'm happy paying that much for a device that I wont have to adapt myself to. I can sell those as new/sealed and get a decent portion of that $300 difference back. With the student offer I'm also getting some airpods. the Best Buy sale comes with just the laptop. and I've been thinking about this for a bit now.

I can use it as my daily driver for that time, test VMs out, see how comfortable I am.īut. I think Best Buy lets you return laptops within 14 days or something like that. They are selling the basic model for $750, to students. Instead, I think I'm very tempted of going to go to Best Buy tomorrow and buy it there. I was thinking of waiting till I leave to order it online.

I would usually only turn my machine off when it runs out of battery so it's basically a waste of money if that's the only feature I'm interested in I 100% don't need if it to automatically open as I power on. I get where you are coming from, but I wanna have my cake and eat it too :3ītw, I thought about that right after I made my post and yeah. Tl dr: I don't need this to be an mega-powerful machine as I already have a device to cover that need, but I do want this to be capable enough to run any OS in a VM as a daily driver if I want/need it. I also want Windows to have the option to play the occassional game on it, but that's a super minimal reason as I have an actual desktop as well and the only thing I may prefer to play on a laptop is Stardew Valley, which runs on everything natively. I always finish the semester with a shitload of documents, apps, and general bloat that is difficult to scrub 100% out. Not only that, but a VM makes it easier to nuke my computer out of every file associated with a class.

Somebody needs help and the instructor, who is almost always a PC user, has trouble or at least needs more time figuring out how to get to the same results with the Mac environment. They usually have a version available for OSX, but that makes getting help from the instructor/prof.

Often, a physics lab section or a math class will need me to use a specific program or tool. But I'd like to be able to run Windows for classes and such.

I don't need both VMs to run at the same time. I'd also like to be able to boot up a Windows VM, which would definitely take a larger toll than Linux. I wouldn't ignore OSX, but I may just use it as an extension to what I can do with Linux instead of the other way around.

Ideally, I think I would use Linux for most things I'd have to install on my machine. I like Linux and I enjoy using it for open source tools for physics, astronomy, and I'd like to do more programming within it. I want it to run a VM that I can comfortably use.

And let's not forget that it would also take a hit from simply running the VM. As I understand it, VMs are basically unusable with 8GB.
